About YPSA Academy

Becoming Smart in More Ways than One through

Body-Brain Compatible Education

History

Yav Pem Suab Academy - Preparing for the Future Charter School # 1186 was approved by the Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD) Board of Education on March 18, 2010.  The Academy is operated by a nonprofit organization led by several long-time educators and community members.  The nonprofit is called the  Urban Charter Schools Collective (UCSC) and was incorporated by the California Secretary of State on October 29, 2009.  Student enrollment has grown steadily from 260 scholars the first year to 420 scholars in the third year.

Approach

At Yav Pem Suab Academy you will find many successful educational practices used  in other parts of the country but not yet implemented in Sacramento.  These successful practices include a longer school day and a shorter summer vacation.  At the Academy, most students attend school between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Thursday.  Kindergarten students attend between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Curriculum

In addition to the standard curriculum of English language art, math, science, and social studies, the Academy offers art, music, Hmong language development, and sports.  The school is open to all children living in California.  We extend a special invitation to students who are not doing well in school and who are currently attending a school in Program Improvement (PI).  Our goal is for each child to exceed the state’s curriculum standards.

As a California public charter school, students living in California attend free of charge.  Student are registered and admitted on a space available basis.  If space is not available, parents can request that their children be placed on the waiting list for the current school year.
